چکیده

The first cetacean circovirus, beaked whale circovirus (BWCV), was recently reported in a Longman’s ( Indopacetus pacificus ) stranded Hawai‘i and represents an emergent disease with unknown population impacts. In other species, infection may cause mortality or opportunistic co-infection by pathogens. We report on targeted surveillance of cetaceans the Pacific basin, including archived strandings where pathological findings suggested presence, mass animals, additional individuals to represent broad range Hawaiian species. Archived tissues primarily from brain, kidney, liver, lung, spleen, lymph nodes between 2000 2020 (n=30) were tested PCR for presence BWCV. Suspect positive tissue amplicons confirmed as BWCV through sequencing. Of screened individuals, 15 animals one more tissues, single striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba testing all six tissues. highest rate detection among cases found brain (69%), followed (67%) lung (64%). Additionally, co-infections morbillivirus (n=3), Brucella ceti (n=1), Toxoplasma gondii (n=1) cases. These results expand potential host into ten odontocete New species include dwarf sperm Kogia sima that O‘ahu 2000, predating initial case broaden known geographic Saipan Western Pacific, American Samoa South Cuvier’s whales Ziphius cavirostris positive. Although clinical significance is currently unknown, this study demonstrates has high prevalence within screening efforts. Infectious diseases pose major threat important emerging populations spanning central, Western, Pacific.

Species-specific beaked whale echolocation signals.

Beaked whale echolocation signals are mostly frequency-modulated (FM) upsweep pulses and appear to be species specific. Evolutionary processes of niche separation may have driven differentiation of beaked whale signals used for spatial orientation and foraging. FM pulses of eight species of beaked whales were identified, as well as five distinct pulse types of unknown species, but presumed to b...

Blainville’s Beaked Whale in New Caledonia

Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) was positively identified in the waters around New Caledonia from two strandings, one live sighting, and two rostra collected from the seafloor. This is the only species of Ziphiidae reported so far from the New Caledonian archipelago and adjacent waters. Blainville’s beaked whale, Mesoplodon densirostris, is probably the most abundant mesoplo...

Description of the karyotypes of Stejneger's beaked whale (Mesoplodon stejnegeri) and Hubbs’ beaked whale (M. carlhubbsi)

The genus Mesoplodon (Cetacea: Odontoceti: Ziphiidae) is one of the few cetacean genera with the karyotype 2n = 42. The 2n = 42 karyotype of M. europaeus and M. carlhubbsi is largely consistent with the general cetacean karyotype 2n = 44, although other 2n = 42 karyotypes do not exhibit clear homologies with the general cetacean karyotype. Therefore, the chromosomes of Mesoplodon species may be...

Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Beaked Whale Echolocation Signals in the North Pacific

At least ten species of beaked whales inhabit the North Pacific, but little is known about their abundance, ecology, and behavior, as they are elusive and difficult to distinguish visually at sea. Six of these species produce known species-specific frequency modulated (FM) echolocation pulses: Baird's, Blainville's, Cuvier's, Deraniyagala's, Longman's, and Stejneger's beaked whales. Additionall...
